Poramboke Land

Also known as: porambok, government poramboke

Poramboke is government land reserved for public or communal purposes - water bodies, roads, burial grounds - which cannot be privately owned or transferred.

The South Indian counterpart to concepts like Gomala, poramboke classification appears in the revenue record and survives any purported private sale. Encroachment followed by regularisation applications and irregular record entries is a recurring pattern, particularly around urbanising water bodies, and a poramboke classification anywhere in the chain requires verification against the original survey record rather than the current extract.

What it does not prove

A private entry in a revenue record over poramboke land does not make it transferable.
