Inam Land

Inam land is land historically granted rent-free by a ruler or the state for religious, charitable or service purposes, and its transferability depends on whether the inam was abolished and the occupancy right validly conferred.

Karnataka abolished most inam tenures through legislation in the 1950s and 1970s, converting eligible holders into occupants on registration of occupancy rights. Land that was inam but where occupancy was never regularised remains restricted. Because these grants are old and the records fragmentary, an inam origin in the chain of title requires tracing the abolition and regularisation orders rather than relying on the current RTC.
