PTCL (Prohibition of Transfer of Certain Lands Act)

The Karnataka PTCL Act 1978 restricts the transfer of land granted to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe holders, and a sale made in breach of it can be set aside and the land restored to the grantee or their heirs.

The restriction attaches to the land, not merely to the original parties, so a purchaser several transfers down the chain can still lose the property. There is no limitation period comparable to an ordinary title claim, and restoration proceedings have succeeded decades after the original breach. Any grant order in the chain of title requires checking whether PTCL applies and whether the prescribed permission for transfer was obtained.

What it does not prove

A long chain of subsequent registered sales does not cure a PTCL breach - later purchasers take subject to the restriction.
