Land Ceiling

Also known as: land ceiling limit, agricultural land ceiling

Land ceiling laws cap the extent of agricultural land a person or family may hold, with land held in excess liable to be declared surplus and vested in the state.

In Karnataka the limits sit in the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and vary with the class of land and family size. The diligence relevance is twofold: a seller holding beyond the ceiling may have an unresolved surplus proceeding attaching to the very land being sold, and a large acquirer needs to confirm its own aggregate holding stays lawful. Recent amendments have relaxed both ceiling and purchaser-eligibility rules, so the applicable limit depends on the date of the transaction being examined.
